Abandoned Gas Station Cleanup Grant 

Agency: Ohio Department of Development, in partnership with Ohio EPA, and the Department of Commerce, Bureau of Underground Storage Tank Regulations
Summary: Provides funding to assess & clean up former gas and service stations with documented petroleum releases.

Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization (AMLER)

Agency: Ohio Department of Natural Resources
Summary: Provides grants for projects that leverage mine land reclamation with local economic development.
Eligible Applicants: Local governments and nonprofit organizations
Available Funding: $17 million in 2022

Brownfield Loan Program

Agency: Ohio Water Development Authority
Summary: Provides loans for undertaking any “voluntary action” and thereby providing funding for the remediation of contaminated property. Properties must meet the definition of a brownfield.
Eligible Applicants: Local government agencies or eligible private entities
Local Match Requirement: N/A

Brownfield Remediation Program

Agency: Ohio Department of Development
Summary: Funds remediation of hazardous substances or petroleum at industrial, commercial, or institutional property
Eligible Applicants: Local governments, port authorities, conservancy districts, park districts, land banks, nonprofits, or for-profit organizations that have entered into an agreement with a unit of local government.
Available Funding: $350 million; $1 million set-aside for each county
Local Match Requirement: No match required for dedicated county portion ($1 million set-aside); 25% local match required for projects awarded outside of the county’s dedicated portion

Brownfields Training, Research, and Technical Assistance Grants

Agency: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Region 5)
Summary: Funding for nationwide brownfields technical assistance cooperative agreements, which focus on five areas of technical assistance and research: revolving loan fund technical assistance, nonprofit technical assistance, local government leaders technical assistance, minimizing displacement research, and land bank research.
Eligible Applicants: Local governments, land clearance authority, regional COG, state, nonprofits, LLCs

Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program

Agency: Ohio Department of Development (ODOD)
Summary: Funding for the demolition of commercial and residential buildings and revitalization of surrounding properties on sites that are not brownfields.

Available Funding: $150 million; $500,000 set-aside for each county
Local Match Requirement: No match required for dedicated county portion; 25% otherwise

Community Recycling and Litter Prevention Grants

Agency: Ohio Environmental Protection Agency
Summary: Funds projects that initiate/expand recycling programs, encourage sustainable practices, and support litter prevention efforts.
Eligible Applicants: Local governments, state colleges/universities, public/private K-12 schools, solid waste management districts or authorities, park districts, health districts, Keep Ohio Beautiful affiliates, boards of education, and nonprofits

Home Sewage Treatment Systems

Agency: Ohio Environmental Protection Agency
Summary: The Ohio Water Pollution Control Loan Fund, in conjunction with local health districts and participating banks, can offer individual property owners reduced interest rates on bank loans to repair or replace failing home sewage treatment systems.

Housing-Related Hazards and Lead-based Paint Capital Fund Program

Agency: U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
Summary: Funding to evaluate and reduce residential health hazards in public housing, including lead-based paint, carbon monoxide, mold, radon, fire safety, and asbestos.
Eligible Applicants: Public housing authorities
Available Funding: $107.4 million

Lake Erie Protection Fund

Summary: Funds research and projects protecting, preserving, and restoring Lake Erie or its tributary watersheds.

Lead Hazard Reduction Grant Program

Agency: U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
Summary: Funds comprehensive lead abatement programs that identify and control lead-based paint hazards in eligible privately-owned rental or owner-occupied housing populations. Healthy Homes Supplemental funding is intended to enhance the lead-based paint hazard control activities by comprehensively identifying and addressing other housing hazards that affect occupant health.
Eligible Applicants: Local governments, special districts
Available Funding:  $403.8 million

Mosquito Control Grants

Agency: Ohio Environmental Protection Agency
Summary: Funding for implementing mosquito control and source reduction measures
Eligible Applicants: Local health departments, other related governmental entities defined as an agency of the state

Multipurpose, Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, Cleanup (MARC) Grant

Agency: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Summary: Multipurpose grants fund assessment and cleanup activities at one or more brownfield sites in a target area. Assessment grants fund brownfield inventories, planning, environmental assessments, and community outreach. Revolving loan Fund grants capitalize loans to clean up brownfield sites. Cleanup grants fund cleanup activities.
Eligible Applicants: General purpose unit of local government, land clearance authority, regional council of council of governments, state, nonprofit organizations, LLCs

Ohio Environmental Education Fund

Agency: Ohio Environmental Protection Agency
Summary: Education projects targeting pre-K to university students/teachers, the public and the regulated community.
Eligible Applicants: State and local governments, local schools/boards, universities, nonprofits, for-profit companies
Available Funding: $750,000, annually
Local Match Requirement: 10%
Deadline: January 15 and July 15, annually

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB) Mitigation Grants

Agency: Ohio PCB Board
Summary: Funds planning, design, and construction of environmental projects (i.e., source controls, remedial measures, etc.) that address environmental harm or benefit public health and mitigate impacts from PCB contamination.
Eligible Applicants: Local governments, nonprofits, colleges and universities, and state agencies.
Available Funding: $80 million (total settlement funds awarded in Yost v. Monsanto)
Deadline: January 31, 2023 for state agencies; June 30, 2023 for other eligible applicants

Recycling Market Development Grants

Agency: Ohio Environmental Protection Agency
Summary: Provides businesses opportunities to create/expand recycling processing and recycled material production.
Eligible Applicants: Businesses in cooperation with local government sponsor (municipality, county, township, village, state college and university, or solid waste management district and authority).

Targeted Brownfield Assessment Program

Summary: Provides property assessments that will facilitate brownfield redevelopment and encourage participation in the Voluntary Action Program at no cost to eligible public entities.

Technical Assistance to Brownfields (TAB) Grants
